Choosing what manga to license for your area is a tricky business. What may be deemed as “kid-friendly” in one country may not be so kid-friendly in another. “Panty-humor”, as Traci Todd, senior editor of Viz Kids called it, is okay for children in Japan but not appropriate for children in America. If it weren’t for the panty-humor, Dragon Ball, for example, would certainly have met the core criteria for a kids manga and that is “humor and heart”, according to Todd.
One upcoming title by Viz that I’m personally interested in is a quirky bean called Mameshiba coming in 2011. More more upcoming titles, and the full interview, visit School Library Journal.
