Back in July 2006, I came across an article in the Newsweek magazine titled Publishing But Can it Make Julienne Fries? which talked about a new “magic machine that could print entire books in mere minutes”.
That magic machine is called Expresso Book Machine.
What’s amazing about this machine is that it can print, bind, and trim a 300-page book in 4 minutes… and the cover is in color to boot! That makes costs at an extremely affordable penny per page. Cha-ching!
Before you start dreaming of getting one and doing your own manga self-publishing, come down to earth because what’s not so affordable is the price tag at a whopping $100,000 per machine. Yeouch!
Though On Demand Books, the company behind the Expresso Book Machine, says that it “is [a] modular in 2 parts and the core unit measures approximately 2.7 feet deep, 3.2 feet wide and 4.5 feet high”, the machine weighs up to 2,000 lbs!! Double ouch!
Expresso Book Machine does make book publishing more affordable for those who have the funds to buy a unit but it is still out of reach for the average Joe and Jane. But I’m patient. Years ago, print on demand was very rare but has now created it’s own niche in the publishing world along with digital books. The time will eventually come when you and I can make our own books, in professional quality, at the press of a button!
