Last week, there was an article at Siliconera stating that the manga industry’s sales went down 20% last year. One of the factors they state as a cause of that is that manga readers today are more technologically savvy and are turning to free scanlations online to get their manga fix. There’s a pretty lively discussion in the forum about it and the general consensus was that the industry needs to step up and go digital if they want to survive in a digital age.
Lo and behold, it seems like some companies get it. Earlier this week, Yen Press made an announcement that they will be going digital with their monthly magazine Yen Plus.
Using a subscription-based model, readers will have to install a standalone browser app to read their manga. Their last slated physically published anthology is July 2010. How many people who make the switch remains to be seen but I personally think it is in the right direction.
