If you’re a fan of Yoshihiro Togashi’s Hunter x Hunter, then you probably already know that it’s on another hiatus. According to Siliconera,
The Hunter x Hunter series is known for its frequent hiatuses, usually occurring every ten chapters. Togashi first went on hiatus in 2005, reportedly due to an illness of some sort, if rumours are to be believed. Since then, the manga-ka’s most recent hiatus lasted from December 2008 through January 2010. At present, Hunter x Hunter is on its 308th chapter.
I have mixed feelings about this news. For one, mangaka’s work crazy hours, bringing out 20 pages every week. That’s writing the dialogue, sketching the draft, drawing then inking, and making corrections on 20 pages. Every week. If you’re an artist who work’s alone, then this is a terribly grueling schedule. If you’re lucky, you may have assistants to help in the process from doing the inking, drawing backgrounds, and other roles. On the other hand, as a fan, I feel like we’re being treated shabbily. Series’ may be published daily, weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly. If Togashi cannot do a weekly release, then he can at least definitely do a monthly one.
With a popular series like Hunter x Hunter, Togashi is most likely given a lot of leeway but for lesser known manga-ka’s they will most likely be given the short end of the stick and be asked to end the series. I’m sure mangaka’s from other countries may not have as much clout as well. Part of me root’s for Togashi’s clout but the fan in me wins out a little more and really, really, wish he’d go back to releasing on a regular basis.
