I think this is such a great idea! Shuho Sato, creator of Say Hello to Black Jack, has been self-publishing his work online for while now according to Siliconera. Sato did something else unconventional and posted the entirety of Say Hello to Black Jack on his site for free. Now he’s taking it even further and has asked his fans if any of them would be willing to volunteer and translate some of his series.
An unnamed site reportedly got the go-ahead from Sato and has supposedly been given permission to distribute and sell overseas. Profits, of course, will be split between the two.
This move reminds me of a project called Open Manga which is to help manga-ka and fan translators touch base with each other and help spread manga in a legal and viable way on the internet.
