Back in the mid-1990′s, I read an article on the New York Times regarding Japanese guys and their interest in dating sims, namely Tomimeki Memorial. Today, it seems that fascination has gone a step further with guys having a relationship with the characters from these games or from anime’s.
July of last year, the New York Times Magazine wrote another article entitled Love in 2-D delving into the world of Japanese men giving up on real-life relationships and turning instead to safe, imaginary relationships with make-believe characters.
Closing off the year, a Tokyo man marries his digital girlfriend witnessed by thousands online.
With all that said, this is not to say that guys from Japan that are the only one’s who are making these kinds of relationships and it is noted that this only accounts for a very small percentage of the population.
As we steadily keep moving into the digital age I would hope that we do not loose sight of our real life connection with others. Whether you connect with these individuals or not, these types of news are food for thought.
